When Greg, the Assistant Online Editor, approached me in the Conde Nast cafeteria during my lunch hour, he seemed panicked.
"EJ has a meeting and wants to know if you'd like to take his place at the Anna Sui show this afternoon. . . ?"
I dropped my fork.
"Wow. Ok! When is it?"
"It starts in fifteen minutes."
I glanced downwards to inspect my casual Wednesday outfit--black knee-high lace up boots, dark skinny jeans, a vintage red oversized boy's sweater, with a gold pendant shaped like eyeglasses, hanging from a chain around my neck. It was cute, but not ideal to wear to a designer fashion show at Bryant Park. I exhaled sharply. Instead of passing up the unforeseen fashionable opportunity, I silently vowed to put more effort into future work outfits and then tossed what was left of my lunch in the garbage. I raced Greg to the ninth floor where EJ handed me his invitation.
"Are you sure you want to go?" he asked.
"Yes!" I cried, grabbing my coat off the back of my desk chair and frantically wrapping a scarf around my neck.
He laughed watching me fumble with my purse.
"Have fun!"
To my [nouveau New Yorker] surprise, Bryant Park was only one block away from the office and I arrived early. I pushed through security and the crowd of attendees to find my seat and gift bag (which contained a miniature Anna Sui perfume, eye shadow and lip gloss, a hot pink sweatband, and the official list of the show's models and garments), with a solid five minutes left for people watching. As the room filled, I admired how various magazine editors and fashion-gurus had layered their clothing to achieve both optimal style and warmth. They made looking chic seem easy. Soon, the runway cleared and the lights dimmed and, suddenly, a pulsing beat filtered through mounted speakers and crescendoed. Here is what I saw and loved:
Understandably, as an outed fringe-fan, I favored this look, too. The wood beaded black velvet dress is really cute and so are the blue fringed boots that were paired with it. Next fall I can also see myself experimenting with a funky headpiece, like this one. The black velvet flowers are wild, but so beautiful, and definitely a cool way to welcome the colder weather.
What were some of your favorite collections at New York Fashion Week?
